Do you, Americans, notice how obsessed you are with race?
Honest question.
I got this ethnic obsession from Jesuits who claim that ignoring ethnicity is one of the ways the Man Keeps The People Down. It's deeply entrenched in Catholic Social Teaching. If you don't talk about ethnicity openly and use it as a resource, you naturally start discriminating against people who are not of the dominant culture e.g. forcing Standard American English-only teaching on poor kids who speak "Ebonics" or Spanish (but rich kids get sent to dual language immersion programs).
I also know that immigrant gangs like 18th Street and MS are some of the most racist people I've ever encountered, murdering blacks simply for being black.
My Nina is big on stereotyping too...
Chinese people are like this, Mexicans are like that, Americans are like this, Blacks are like that...
Originally posted by AThousandYoungIgnoring ethnicity on the grounds of culture is counter productive, but ignoring ethinicity on the grounds of inclusion is vital. Knowing where to draw that line is difficult, but blanket positive or negative discrimination can only damage.

Originally posted by AThousandYounghow did Obama get his black ethnicity? exposure in college? he apparently did not meet his black relatives until he was an adult, except for a few days or weeks, a few times.
Perhaps "white" wasn't the best choice of words. Their ethnicity is mainstream American (or English or whatever), and many people do put that on those forms. However I cannot imagine that such a person would have no familiarity with Afro-American culture. He'd probably have both ethnicities, as Obama does.
What do you mean by "screen"?
re screening, i meant the question i posted and you've answered separately:
how far would a white guy get trying to claim black ethnicity for college admissions?

Listen here, I am not attacking you but, to be honest, you really know
only the Chinese in the States, the Mexicans in the States, etc.

Edit. By the way, hombre, I have a bonus trivia for you: which US
president referred to the expansionist policies of his Evil Empire as fully
justified because the whites should master weaker races? (using
those words)
I tell you, there's a long tradition of obsession with race right under
your feet.
