So what you gotta say Dan? 🙂

Anybody else with some feedback?

As the dodgy entrant in the self round, I don't mind if the round is cancelled. It doesn't seem like there is too much interest out there.

Yes, I think we may have to cancel the "Self" round. Your picture is still the only one I got, and DdV is still the only one I know about who plans to send something. And my own pictures seem to be lost. 🙁 (I was quite curious how the "self" pictures would turn out, although it's worse that my first aurora pictures from my new location were on that film, too. 🙁 ) Anyone else who would like to enter, please speak up now!

Cancel the Self round?? Just when I was starting to get confident I had a good chance at winning or at least getting a second place in this round.

No, I wouldn't mind, because I don't even particularly like the pictures I could enter. Maybe we should review the upcoming topics to see if there's enough interest in them. I would have problems getting an entry for kids, humour, still life (I'm not sure what a still life is, exactly), and home. Also, I would drop best of the best. That sounds like a a final round, and I would hope this competition could become a steady feature here.

By the way, I kinda liked Joe Bangles Dance andI would have given it more points if it was presented differently. The background picture is really distracting I think, and the pictures seem a bit unsharp. But i liked the minimalist interpration of both dancing and scene in this series. 🙂

We can have a round just for you, then you can get both a first and a second place. 😉

I agree we should review the upcoming topics, some of them probably won't get many entries, if any. Here's the list of upcoming rounds again:

9. Black and White
10. Kids
11. Urban
12. Humour
13. Chess
14. Still Life
15. Extended Exposure
16. Movement/Motion
17. Home (can be in your home, or just in the locallity that u would regard as home)
18. People
19. Best of the Best.

I don't think I'll have anything for "Black and White" and "Humour", and probably not for "People" either. "Kids" depends on whether my siblings give their permission to show pictures of their kids. I don't have anything for the chess round at the moment (I had some chess pictures on the lost film), but I might take some more before the round starts. For the other rounds I'd probably be able to find something.

I would like to have the competition as a steady feature as well, but it seems that people start losing interest, so I am not sure if it's feasible. It's also quite a lot of work to run the comp, but maybe we could take turns.

I think all it needs is a break.

I'm sure if you start a new competition in 3 months time, referring to history, you'll get plenty of responses.

Hi

I've been busy at work and home.. also in Flickr

I just started a group for RHP members
If anyone from RHP wants to put photos up sub to flickr
and msg me as tirau dan to get in group..

http://www.flickr.com/groups/rhp/

There are photo classes, masses of inspirational groups and a myriad of critiques from pro photographers, help groups from users of every type of camera and amazing intros to manipulation.

Anyone can send photos into the rhp group and post them in the forum for comment and or help with photography.

I'll send some for any round..and will check back for the deadlines.

The series round hinged on what was a series and how they were presented. The few of us left here have slightly, though not vastly different opinions (healthy stuff)
I'm not sure we are helping people develop as photographers.

Perhaps Rag or Nordlys should name a specific subject for everyone to go out and photograph as well as we can.. like a clock, a leaf or a stone
then have a technical discussion about each photo in relation to the persons camera, the composition etc etc,

Then later someone can post a pic..we'll all download it , manipulate it and put it back in for judging by vote. should be fun.

Just thoughts... I'll go with the flow.

All the best to all

I reckon we should go ahead with "Black and White", "People" (maybe incorporating the "kids" round into this) and "Urban", at the least. I'm sure DdV has been waiting since the start for the B&W round. 🙂

People have no excuse not to be able to enter these very broad rounds. If it turns out that there is no interest, maybe take a break for a while.

Hey Dan,

just had a look at a couple of your pics on flickr. I love the pics of you in the picture frame. I think those 4 would have been a winning "series" or "self" entry. You also have some really nice B&W shots.

I'm already registered on Flickr, but haven't had much of a chance to do stuff on there yet. I'm registered as Ragnorak.

Incorporating the "Kids" round into the "People" round sounds like a good idea to me. I don't really want to drop any of the rounds, but we need entries. If we take a break, we could use it to try to recruit more participants. I already got one person interested.

I certainly would participate in the B&W round, that's for sure. 🙂

I too think it's a good idea to incorporate 'kids' in the people round. I'm not sure about taking a break. The competition has taken on a slower pace compared to when it started anyway. I can imagine the initial enthusiasm fading somewhat, but I'm not sure just taking a break would lead to more entries when we start of again.

There might be some other reasons why the number of entries has fallen. I found it easier to produce an entry for the first few rounds, the last couple of topics seemed a bit more difficult. Maybe the competition elements deters people from sending in their photos. I can imagine some people holding off because they might think that their entries don't stand a chance. Or maybe it is all becoming a bit too much and we do need a break. Just a few thoughts.

I'd be happy to continue this in it's current form, but we might try out some alternative approaches too. I participated in a few photo memes in the past, http://www.photofriday.com/ for example. The topics there are generally very broad, leaving a lot of room for your own interpretation. (some examples from the last few weeks: Darkness, five, chaos, somber etc.). This might make it easier for people to find an image that's suitable for entry. And this system might encourage people to go out and make a picture like Dan suggested, especially when given enough time to do so.

We also might loosen up a bit on the competition element. Again taking the example of photofriday, we might just select one, or a few, 'noteworthy' images, pictures that really stand out. There wouldn't be a clear winner and there never would be pictures that don't get a single vote, but there would be recognition for exceptionally nice pictures. We might even make voting anonymous by sending a vote to the photocomp mail adress, rather than posting it in a thread.

These are just a few random thoughts. As I said, I would be happy to continue with the system we use now.

Best regards,

David

Throw me in for B&W and Urban.

Andy

Edit - I'm only using old pictures - I would like an excuse to go take some again, but generally timescales in the rounds of this ongoing comp have been prohibitive (as I'm analogue, not digital). I like the idea of the photofriday type rounds (Five has such a broad scope it would make it very interesting!) too.

I notice a lot of people here are (still?) analog. I really like using film, I feel it retains more of the 'magic' I associate with taking pictures. The fact that I almost exclusively shoot B&W isn't exactly an artisitic choice, but has more to do with the fact that that's the only type of film I can process myself.
Maybe using film correlates with an interest in chess?
