Edit - I'm only using old pictures - I would like an excuse to go take some again, but generally timescales in the rounds of this ongoing comp have been prohibitive (as I'm analogue, not digital). I like the idea of the photofriday type rounds (Five has such a broad scope it would make it very interesting!) too.
You are thrown in. 🙂 As for the timescales, that's why there is a list of the upcoming rounds, so you can start thinking about future rounds before it's too late. (Of course that doesn't help if the film gets lost. 🙁) I have also only used old pictures so far, but I have started taking pictures with the photo comp in mind (although I still don't take many pictures, as long as there is no aurora).

Maybe using film correlates with an interest in chess?

Agreed it is a kinda 'magic' between what happens when you take the shot and when you eventually get to see it again. This is lost with digi, which has obvious benefits as a result (re-shoot whilst still there if result not right etc).

I process my B&W films myself as that doesn't need a darkroom, but the printing cost as a result of that is so much more (each print is pricd at a reprint at 50p to £1 per go) I have a fair number of negs that I have never printed up. I had brief use of a darkroom to do my own prints, but that is not the case now.

I also only have occasional access to a scanner through work, which makes preparing and entering pictures for an online viewing a more lengthy process.

I'm not sure about the chess correlation, but if the sample is us and the population size 2, then you are spot on!

I recently brought all my negatives to a photoshop and they stuck them all on cds for me for 14cents each.

That sounds reasonable... I'll ask around Cov's indies to see what they can do here.

Was it a chain store (Max Spielman etc) or an independant one?

Well, if it's expensive here I might be in touch about a small business arrangement... 🙂

When I started aurora photography, I either scanned from copies or asked for a CD together with the copies. Most of the time I was neither happy with the copies nor with the CD, so I ended up doing slide only (at least for the aurora), getting a film scanner (Nikon Coolscan IV ED) and scanning the pictures myself. I am mostly happy with the results, but it takes a lot of time (in addition to the scanning, I also have to cut and frame the pictures). I still think it's the best solution for me because it's so difficult to get the shop to do aurora pictures right, but for people who take more "normal" pictures, your solution is probably better and easier, and depending on the number of pictures you take, also cheaper (a film scanner costs quite a lot of money).

When I didn't yet develop my own negatives I also let the photo service put them on a cd on a few occasions. I was also disappointed by the result, because of the low resolution at which they were scanned.
Now I use a flatbed scanner with an option to scan negatives too. I've heard the cheapest models perform awfully, but I have a somewhat higher-end model which is very good an allows me to scan the negatives with a resolution up to 3200dpi. I'm very pleased with it. Maybe this is an inbetween solution, giving acceptable results without having to buy a dedicated film scanner.

Nothing. 😳 Sorry, I have a headache and stomach ache and am in a bad mood... And I still don't really know what to do. What about having an in-between non-competitive round just for fun and discussion with some broad topic (ideas are welcome) and then go back to the competition? Or we could just go ahead with the Black and White Round. Sorry, I am not able to make decisions at the moment, you'll have to help me out.

I'd go ahead with the Black and White round. Or maybe this is the time to have that break other people suggested. Maybe we could just start with setting a date for the B&W round that is far enough into the future to consider the time between then and now a break? Say, in three weeks or something like that?

Sounds good to me. Any objections?

I'm not so sure a break will do much good.

I'm not that pushed, but my suggestion would be to run the B&W round as we already have a few pics for that. And at the meantime, have some sort of discussion group on submitted pictures as suggested to keep the thread interesting.

Just my thoughts.
