I wonder how many non-subs would have to [or prefer to] leave if told this was to be a subscriber only site. The majority, I would think.
Although I haven't been on many other chess sites I have to say this is the most unfriendly to non-subs site I've come across yet, which cannot be doing it's reputation any good.
Obviously, it's not everyone but it seems like its contagious here.

Originally posted by buffalobillI'm harsh about this but I can't believe that someone who's not in a third world country can't pay the subscription : 29$per year means that one has to spare barely 0.08$ (8cents!!) per day(0.08 X 365 = 29,2$).
Scraping pennies while a student sucks - truly. I paid my whole way through uni, by working vac jobs and 3/4 nights in a bar. Never had a holiday in four years but emerged debt-free. It's your choice, but the $30 here in my country represents a meal at a steak house for two with a reasonable bottle of wine. I think it's great value for money - but don't tell Russ, he might get ideas.

I was mainly referring to all those who cry in forums that they want a subscription but say that they can't afford it,even living in Europe or North America.

Originally posted by Ravellowell, she's not in a 3rd world country, but her parents can't aupport her and she's not getting any support from out government other than paying for her fees (no loan etc), and she can't get an overdraft.
And your point is?
in short, she can't pay for her subscriptions. although she doesn't actually play here, but that's beside the point...
also, i would probubly leave this site if it became subscribers only...
I will just say that if someone has such economical difficulties then has worse things to worry about than playing on an internet chess site.
Apart cases like this, everyone who can afford a pc can consequently afford a 30$.
The ones who play in public libraries don't have much time so they are happy with their six games, then the problem doesn't exist.
Despite those considerations, also I don't think that Rhp should be a "subscribers only",thois would be simply silly and counterproductive in economical and popularity terms: my only problem with non subscribers is that they post too much drivel and crap in forums, hence I think that they should be limited to play their games without forums,or give them a ten messages per day limit.
Originally posted by RavelloAgreed - I only tried the site out at a friends recomendation and if I had to pay without knowing if its any good or not I wouldn't have bothered. Surpised that so many players who post on the forums and obviously spend a lot of time on here aren't prepared to spend 3 pence a day. Not sure what they're spending it on instead?

Right I've done a count up of all the sites I visit regularly, the majority of them are donation sites[ie, you pay IF and what you can afford] I gave up counting at seventeen; so if I had to pay $29 or so at each of these it would become ridiculously expensive. What about Anti-Virus software etc, do you all pay for that or do you use free stuff?
As a subscriber, would you be happy with what non-subs get? No.
As non-subs, most of us are fairly happy with what we get.
I am, though the message situation does seem a bit daft.

Anyone who tells me that they can't afford 30 bucks a year is a LIAR. There can't be any excuses. Even the worst scrounger out there can rustle up less than a quid a week. If you're that hard up, go begging.
Do you smoke? Quit. OK, that may be a bit hard for some, so... erm... Stop buying tabs and pick up dog ends. Drink? Drink water. It's usually free. Eat? ...[text shortened]... s? Go there, skinflint.
EDIT: If you're that bad off, sell your fckuing computer...
Try to show a bit of empathy to the people in countries where $30 is A LOT of money.
What difference does it make to you whether they subscribe or not? Russ is happy to provide the service for free, so why should you feel the need to force people in paying for it?
I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been said before.
