They are a homogeneous society, all other people are called gaijin or "outside people", even people of Asian descent are refered to this way. It is not unusual to be called Gaijinsan, or Mr. foriegner if you will
Maybe the people in Okinowa aren't racist...They just don't like American Military people. Not many occupied people like their occupiers.

Originally posted by Red NightOh, my mistake. I think there is a group that were always servants, and even to this day are considered lower class. This happens in India too, although i'm not sure if it's for the same reason.
I was saying that I believe the Japanese consider the Okinawan's to be inferior.
There may be other groups as well.
Originally posted by yo its meYeah, but to just say it's a religious thing and leave it at that would be wrong, it is a cultural racism where a group in the society are treated as inferior.....by birth. This might also be the reason in Japan too, but i know little of their culture, so i would not dream of commenting.
I think you are thinking about the Hindu religion
Originally posted by huckleberryhoundWell I don't know anything about it either. I watched a programme about an 'untouchable' who lived on a dump and she was related to some lady who she had to serve rice to...vague memory of it anyway.

Originally posted by duecerOhhh, i get it. Moving American troops from America to Okinawa is NOT called an invasion. It is called a RESPONSE. And never leaving Okinawa is not called an occupation, it is called a constitutionally approved long stay.

Right, I wonder why the constitution was amended. Could it be because the Japanese lost the war and... well let's cut/paste someone else's words since I apparently know nothing of history.
..."After Japan's surrender, the U.S. government needed to decide what to do with these units. In Washington, the debate centered around two arguments. The War Department considered Okinawa vital to regional U.S. security interests. Forces on Okinawa would allow for power projection throughout Asia, address the growing Soviet threat, and permit the United States to keep a closer eye on Japan (over which fears of revived militarism still existed). The State Department viewed retention of the islands as a liability. The islands would be expensive to administer, complicate citizenship issues, and leave the United States vulnerable to criticisms of colonizing the islands"

As for current problems caused by the US military presence in Okinowa,
"Today, Okinawa plays host to over 52,000 U.S. military and civilian personnel, the majority of whom live in central Okinawa. Problems resulting from U.S. military on the island manifest themselves in several key areas. First, given the trend toward urbanization in central Okinawa since the end of World War II, many U.S. military installations now sit in highly populated areas, where they once did not. For areas hosting installations with ground units, this poses an irritant; for areas in which aircraft constantly take-off, land, and train, it poses a potential danger. Second, U.S. military concentrations give rise to a sizeable number of complaints from local governments and citizens, such as the negative impact on the tourist industry and economy, environmental issues, training accidents, and crimes committed by U.S. servicemen and their family members against local citizens. Finally, because of the Government of Japan's dual responsibilities to Okinawa as an administrative prefecture and its obligations to the U.S. under the Mutual Security Treaty, it is often placed in the role of "middleman," trying to accommodate U.S. military operational needs and local concerns, with varying degrees of success.
After the September 1995 rape of a 12-year-old girl by two U.S. marines and one U.S. sailor, the United States and Japanese governments undertook the Special Action Committee on Okinawa (SACO) discussions. These negotiations were designed to identify ways to reduce transgressions by U.S. military and examine broader issues related to U.S. military presence"
Call me crazy but I think i might be a bit pissed at the US military if I lived in Okinawa.

Could you give us a few examples, I think you're making it up. What exactly is your ethnic background? You dealt with CONSTANT ridicule? That may be, but it's not because of racism.
I wonder how many here have actually been victims of racism?
In my home town, I constantly dealt with ridicule and being singled out because of my heritage. Anyone else?
