But seriously, I'm just an old-timer, chess promoter who has sponsored many chess events. I used to teach chess and sponsor youths who showed some talent. My greatest rewards came when someone I sponsored did better than they thought they could, and that's why I wanted to promote chess among the girls. I'll bet many of them can play better than their confidence level - so what better way to get more of them involved?
Sponsors like myself feel good to be able to promote the game among our youth. It makes us feel like we've done something to better the world. I felt the need to sponsor something somewhere, so that's how this all came about.

That's a noble and worthy cause for sponsoring a tournament. I still don't see why this should include only ladies. But, it may just be beyond my ability to understand, I guess.

Have you really been so unlucky that everyone you have dealt with in life has had a selfish ulterior motive in all the aspects of life you involve yourself in, what makes you so cynical and mistrusting, is it that hard for you to believe that at least one person out of all the thousands on the site might just want to give something for nothing in return.

Relax, will you? I'm merely questioning why he would want start an only ladies tournament? He said it was because it makes him feel good to do something for the youth. I think that's noble (not being cynical here), and although I still think the youth includes young men, it's not really a big deal. So it's settled and done with as far as I'm concerned.

The truth is that you can't admit that it is indeed a fiasco:I just checked and still out of 19 entrants in the 1300+ event,only three are women.
What does this suggest to you,genius?
The tournament is open since two weeks now,and the only thing you achieved is to start a silly cat fight around this tournament.
If women feel sooooo interested about this tournament they should have entered it ,don't you think? I bet whatever you want that this tournament will never reach 40 women entering and that it will be deleted, just like Russ did some days ago with 14 other tournaments which were never going to fill.

Could I just suggest a possible solution to the fiasco?
I think with a quick name change, we could be guaranteed of an all female entry. So, my suggestion is that you ask Russ to change the name from "2006 Ladies Open sponsored by arrakis 1300+" to "2006 Lil' Ladies Open sponsored by arrakis 1300+". 😲
I'm sure even Xanthos has enough self respect not to have that on his profile for ever.

I've always admired your ability to enter LOGIC into the equation!
But alas, when I asked Russ to intercede he told me that he has so many obligations that he doesn't want to address any more problems. 🙁
So, he offered me a choice. DUMP the tournament or let it ride as stated...
Well, I don't want to just simply dump the tournament. I think that this thing could have some good implications and will be good for the site. Unfortunately, as pointed out by many of you, this idea will only work if the membership allows it.
On the other hand, those who are trying to not allow it will be noted in history records forever. Their "sin" of not allowing women to play in a tournament for themselves could lead to the downfall of this site.

Women have not entered this tournament because it had mostly guys already registered in it from Day One.
I am sure most women who wanted to enter this tournament said to themselves "What's the point?" I know this because it's the same reason wucky3 and I pulled out of it.
I still agree with Xanthos that this tournament should have been handled differently from the beginning, in that names should have been taken of women who were interested and then the tournament started manually using that list. Yes, Arrakis, I know, but this site unfortunately has a LOT more boys than men. 😞

I just joined a 50pt band -- 1350-1399 -- then I poked around the top of the list to find 2 players topping out at 1670 and one over 1700.
I commend you on the girls tournament.....but you will fail for the same reason the "banded tournaments" are a joke. Too many people on this site have no class.
