Originally posted by JonathanB of LondonI'd be very surprised if that is true, normally you need 7/11 in the British and this year it's not a strong tournament. In fact I've just found a report from last year's tournament which said that Rudd missed out on a IM norm there by only drawing in the last round, leaving him on 7/11 (i.e. he needed 7.5/11 for an IM norm).
blonde bombshell or otherwise ... I'm told (by User 64768) that Jack Rudd made an IM norm by winning today.
According to his blog and posts on chess forums Rudd has two IM norms and has exceeded a FIDE rating of 2400, so he just needs one more norm to get the title. The British Championships is probably one of the more difficult ways to get a norm.
I missed out a sentence from my previous post. I meant to say that he's got a really exciting playing style - you'd expect it to fail against the elite players, but sometimes it works against them as well.
Lee Davis drew again today. He's on 1.5/9, and is now only equal last, rather than last on his own!
And I completely forgot about one member of RHP who is doing much better than Lee Davis in the British Championships: User 439257. Of course he's not what you'd call an _active_ member, but he's a member all the same. Davies is currently on 5.5/9.

I just had a thought - they relaxed the rule about being over 2400 recently, so that you only have to have a performance rating over 2400 at any stage during the tournament. I wonder if they have done the same with norms? In other words Jack Rudd's 6.5 counts as a 6.5/9 performance and it doesn't matter what happens in the last two rounds, it will be the 6.5/9 which will be submitted for the norm?
Originally posted by Rene-ClaudeI actually watched the last hour or so of Dave's game. It was really very unfortunate. Dave had a huge (probably winning) advantage (a pawn up: a strong passed a-pawn) but got tired and allowed himself to get into time trouble when his opponent rightly tried to complicate. Dave missed a tactic, which probably cost him half a point, but had lost the plot by then and finally blundered the whole point away. At least playing the tournament leader tomorrow, albeit with black. gives him a chance to get back into the mix with a round to go.
Alao David Tebb lost today and his 'reward' is a game against one of the tournament leaders, John Sugden, tomorrow!
Originally posted by Rene-ClaudeRudd's game was horrible, wasn't it? He just seemed to be moving the same few pieces again and again in the opening and ended up a pawn down for absolutely nothing.
Rudd comes back down to earth with a bump!
Kolbus has had a good tournament and is now back in with a shout at the title.
