b6.
Fianch. the bishop. Control long diagonal. Add to control of centre and possible c5 with d4 under strong control and the d pawn weak and backward.
any takers?
I would probably go with Nc6 or Nxc3, waiting for someone like RahimK to show the way 😉
For what it's worth, I vote: Nc6

...b6
Nxd5, Qxd5
Bf3, e4
Be2, we move teh queen, play Bb6 or something to resolve the issue.
I still prefer Nc6 as it avoids these complications.
Originally posted by TheGambitI always guess the move first and then consult a db. So my guess is 8...Nc6.

I checked the db and there are 9 games, 7 draws, and 1 win each side.
Possible moves are 8...Be6 3 games played by 2400+ players as black around 1990-2000.
8...Nc6 3 games but these games also feature 9...Be6 as their next move played by 2300+ player by black but in the 1980's.
8...Nxc3 9.dxc3 Qxd1+ 2 games, both draws but black had to work hard I think in these.
I'd have to go with 8...Be6, since the 3 games were played by the highest rated players, and are more recent and also because 8...Nc6 featured 9...Be6 but if you play 8...Nc6 then you can't play c5.
So the line basically went 8...Be6 9.0-0 c5 and then black played, Nc6 Re8 etc...
So I'm going with 8...Be6 best move.

I do have to admit I like the ideas behind c5 but felt that played at once would too easily be undermined.
I'll go with the suggesion of be6
If we can prevent white advancing his d-pawn we will be in good shape i think.
That's 2 for 8...Be6.

I am not going to change my vote, that way it hangs in the air like an unclaimed 50 dollar bill, but Be6 looks pretty sound to me too. I am just in the habit of developing knights before bishops.

Be6 is played next move after Nc6. So really it would just transpose kind of.
But if we go Be6 first then we can play c5 and then Nc6. There is a big difference.
So any way you look at it, Be6 must be played. So why not play it right now and leave the option of c5? It's better to leave more option open.
Did I change your mind now? I hope so 🙂

8..Be6 🙂 Is this programme known to be very passive?
Actually I don't think any program can be considered passive. They are all so strong.
