Sweet, but a couple of questions...

Why didn't you grab the pawn on move 30? Rxd3 doesn't seem to any obvious tactical blow, 30. ... Rxd3 31 Qxd3 Qxb2 32. Qb1 seems to leave you with a slight endgame advantage due to bishop vs knight with pawns on both sides? My endgame positional evaluation is notoriously bad though...

Also, is there any reason I'm missing why David didn't snatch the f pawn on move 43? 43... Rxf3 and obviously, you can't grab the d pawn back because of threats, variously, of mate or discovered check winning the queen (Rxd2 Rf1#, Qxd2 Rf2+). Similarly, looks like he could've done the same the next move, with I guess plausible continuation 45. Qg2 Qc2 46. Qg1 Rc3 -- ?

Holy Moses, I totally missed the mate-in-one. Gulp.

No wonder I am so lousy at those mate-in-three puzzles. 😞

I'll bet you were hoping your opponent would sucker into taking your rook with his e pawn at move 27. It looks like that would have led to mate in two.

Well, more I just wanted the free pawn, but I wouldn't have refused the mate :-) Actually, it's a wonder I got away with some of the stuff I did in that game -- particularly move 35. I recall spending something like 25 minutes trying to calculate a winning line after that move (ie. something other than "simplify and try and win with your extra piece against his extra pawns in the endgame&quot😉 and concluding that it was completely uncalculable.

Yeah, if I had been you at 35, I probably would have just settled for an immediate swap of queens and rooks, and then hoped my extra bishop could eliminate his promotion threats. But it worked out great the way you played it, and your queen chased down his king.

I don't think the line you describe is a better one. Certainly not after 32. Qb1. I think I have lost my advantage completely making that move. In my opinion after exchanging queens, black is even a little bit better. If you said 32. Qd6+, I could agree with you. This wasn't a better line, but I certainly had an advantage by playing that line. But in my opinion the line I played was a bit stronger.

On your second question: If 43... Rxf3 44. Bc4 Qe4 45.Be2 is not looking nice for him. 43... Rxf3 will eventually end in a trade of the queens and that is not in black's favor.
If he should do 44... Rxf3 it would end not so good for black (this was your third question, am I right?): 45. Qd4+ Ke7 46. Bd5. This would be the end for black.

Great games, Ironman! 🙂 Thanks for posting them.

But who were the players, when were they played, in what events, etc?

I like very much the old chess magazines of the XIX century where the games are quoted simply as "recently played by correspondence against an amateur"
Here is another.
