@ghost-of-a-duke saidI am not being flippant at all. I think you are being silly.
I think you are showing your flippancy toward mental health. I literally cringed when I read the title of this thread.

@relentless-red saidGosh. If I can get them to delete this thread, will you resubscribe?
I will definitely not renew the four years for the price of three subscription I purchased in Feb 2020, when it expires.
The thread was alerted but it wasn't taken down and it's still here, quite rightly so.
Does anyone think the moderator has been duped into believing the myth that most violence is caused by mental illness?
Or does anybody think the moderator seeks to propagate the myth?
Deary me, this is so silly!

@ghost-of-a-duke saidNo it isn’t.
When mental health is reported in the media it is invariably under stigmatizing and inflammatory headlines. Much like your own.

@ghost-of-a-duke saidWhat is cringeworthy is your blatant virtue signalling.
I think you are showing your flippancy toward mental health. I literally cringed when I read the title of this thread.

@relentless-red saidGood riddance!
The fact that this website tolerates a harmful myth as a thread title is one of the reasons I will definitely not renew the four years for the price of three subscription I purchased in Feb 2020, when it expires.

@divegeester saidOf course it is.
No it isn’t.
Studies consistently show that both entertainment and news media provide overwhelmingly dramatic and distorted images of mental illness that emphasise dangerousness, criminality and unpredictability. They also model negative reactions to the mentally ill, including fear, rejection, derision and ridicule. The consequences of negative media images for people who have a mental illness are profound. They impair self-esteem, help-seeking behaviours, medication adherence and overall recovery. Mental health advocates blame the media for promoting stigma and discrimination toward people with a mental illness. However, the media may also be an important ally in challenging public prejudices, initiating public debate, and projecting positive, human interest stories about people who live with mental illness.

@ghost-of-a-duke saidWhy have you brought entertainment in it?
Of course it is.

@ghost-of-a-duke saidI’ve not seen one headline in years which does anything you’re claiming.
Of course it is.

@divegeester saidMaybe not in the Beano.
I’ve not seen one headline in years which does anything you’re claiming.

@fmf saidYou claim later in the thread that the quote in the title is ridiculous and attribute it to some backward American or another. Why is none of that made clear in the OP? Rather than leaving the inflammatory title just hanging there.
Read the OP and the thread. No myth is being perpetuated.
Again, with the stigma surrounding mental health the title is ill-judged, and unnecessary. Sure, you're using it for hypothetical reasons, but that doesn't render it any less repugnant. And yes, you are very much perpetuating the myth around mental health.
