So two timely questions for all pub members to consider: What is the NFL besides
a major business venture with a union shop and what has made it so successful?

Oh, and fantasy.

The replays certainly contribute to the enjoyment of close calls and such, but I think TV makes it far far easier to appreciate pitching. It is hard to see a curve, cutter, or slider at the park, but on TV every pitch can be distinguished with multiple angles and replays. And the knuckleball was made for TV!
However, the biggest purely TV element to me is that commercials during TV broadcasts only come between half innings and pitching changes.
By contrast, God forbid someone should score in football- unless you need to go to the fridge or the bathroom.
One team scored TD- go to commercial break.
We come back, extra point is kicked- go to commercial break.
We come back, the kickoff is made- go to commercial break.
Nevertheless, football has a big advantage on TV over baseball. I am a 44 yr old male with two little girls.
If I go to an MLB game, the fans are great, and strangers act nice to my two little girls.
If I go to an NFL game, I see guys my age acting like they were in college, and the drunkeness and flagrant profane language is such that I no longer consider taking my daughters to be an option- that and the fact that it seems dumb to see the whole stadium sit idle while everyone pauses for a TV timeout!
I would fully expect that hockey and basketball fans might be able to also make cases for those sports, so it probably comes down to the viewer, not the viewing!

Football on TV > Football Live
But I agree with you in that it depends on the viewer.

Just for something to say: I will give my picks for the Season. I'll start with the NFC EAST; Dal Beware of the skins. Reeves fired Shanahan for Designing a passing Offense on Elways arm. He's a Qb coach who happened to pick a live QB. Snycer finally has done something right. SOUTH; ATL. NO was a feel good story(cinderella) for the nation after the Katrina diasaster who played ROAD games all season. Like most teams they will find it's hard to repeat.WEST; SF. Showed the most promise late last season SL looks to start a rookieQB. I think QB's show more promise learning for a season or 2. NORTH; GB. The kid showed proper way to dethrown a superstar. the vikes arent going to just give it away, after all they got the superstar. Adrian needs stidkum on his hands to take this team to a super level. AFC: EAST; NE will probaly be the most exiting div this season. Sanchez wants a great year and MIA looks to throw it's hat in the ring. Go with talent and hope the carwreck didn't shakeup the QB. SOUTH; TEN amped up run gm. Needs Vince to remember pass first then run. Not a real favorite of Run QB's since Cunningham. Indy has problems replacing talent for Peyton HOU wants some also. West; SD div looked like diasaster Rivers will show why they have 1 of only 2 of back-back Off cor. SUPER BOWL WINNERS. NORTH; BAL has showcased a DEF the last few years. Ben put PIT in early hole. Palmer & company looks dangerous.
Originally posted by ChessPraxisIMO, natural and legitimate competition represents a good thing. It provides stimulation and beneficial concentration for children of all ages. Inordinate competition and self indulgent combativeness for their own sake (especially within marriage, business teams and friendship) promote dysfunction, loss of loyalty, bitterness. We all seem to crave timely competition out of a self affirming need to win. We satisfy the need in two primary ways: direct engagement and indirectly as spectators. NFL, whatever its shortcomings, seems to still stand tall in its established surrogate role as a major provider of vicarious experience.
It's man's nature to be combative.
