Maybe that's why you're not there, lol.
I guess some people remember Mexico as "lindo y querido" and some people curse it through their teeth as a cestpool... what can I say but not that I loved Mexico's people less, but that my mother loved her family's future more.

It seems you understood little or nothing about Vargas Llosa's speech.

Those who criticize the country more fiercely not only love more their country, but are much more useful to it.

Edit. Just a note: the wealth distribution fact remains unresponded. This is, of course, because having a wealthy elite doesn't solve the misery of millions.

Re: Mexico, you can provide all the fi ...[text shortened]... prised to know how far I am from the crippled, useless Mexican leftist groups.[/i]
No wonder you've developed a snobish tendency to peg developing nations with political leaders you disagree with as "cestpools..."

Not even the US quality of life is high enough for your highbrow and distinguishing tastes for Nordic Europe.

Figures, facts, scientific methods, and development economics all do contribute to the solutions to end poverty.
Political interest groups like Unions, monopolies, and government employees tend to try to hog the resources of the economy, and they are abbetted by the right in some cases and by the left in some cases. However, the current government has been more effective at pushing tough and sorely-needed political reforms that have been very unpopular with some interest groups (ie expensive pensions were bitterly defended by government employees and the reform to teacher-hiring practices was bitterly opposed by unions, while the regulatory strengthening of competitions has been fought fiercely by Telmex.

Reforms help people, political interest groups don't always like to see these changes. So keep posting your politics and I'll keep posting my facts. Mexico is changing for the better (though at a slower pace than it should).

You will not like learning, for example, that high growth is one of the most effective proven reduccers of inequality. As Mexico's reforms help make up for its declining oil reserves, it will be up to additional reforms to carry it to the levels of high growth that have helped India, Ireland, China and Chile to massively reduce poverty in the next few years.

Can you accept that solutions to poverty have been extensively studied and may not always fit your political predispositions perfectly?

Though high for latin ameican standards, the quality if life is low for northern european standards, and yet Mexico's quality of life is improving. You may be shocked to hear that even corruption is being slowly but surely clerared away, as corrupt police are prosecuted instead of sheltered, and as new public administration methods and technology are applied under sounder institutions.

In other words, you are to quck to jump to the sensationalist highlights that the media flashes in front of you to get ratings, and you buy every attack without questioning it. Learn from how hard you try to question me and use a fifth of that effort against the sensationalist press. mexico, sorry to disappoint you, is not a failed state.

Don't forget you were the one raving about your conspiracy theories without offering evidence, then got mad when I disagreed, and did a total Us vs Them, so don't try to say that about me without looking in the mirror first. For a social democrat, you have some decidedly far-left sympathies for the 2006 elections.. but then close elections such as that tend to be highly polarizing...

OK, I will only answer about schools by saying no to the ones you mentioned.

Seems you are not the only one that is US educated.

Neither of us were educated by union-hired teachers from Mexico, otherwise we would have a lot less intelligent things to debate about... like duh, how many millions should teachers make to save mexico... that would be the conversation in that case.

There's no better response to this than what shav said. Tatcherist, to say the least.

"...poverty is being reduced"

"... quality of life is being reduced"

"... corruption is slowing down"

"... things are not that bad"

etc. etc.

Gee, this sounds like a speech from a politican of the ruling party and/or part of the elite!

Share your honest opinion (and facts) about the failed state Mexico is becoming, not the usual blah blah. The variables of the Fund for Peace are there, and Mexico is falling in the ranking, year after year. The unfair distribution of wealth is there also, and it's a fact. What you've been posting is politics... and the same arguments and ideas that I can read from the President's webpage. Exactly the same.

I guess the millions of Mexicans flying the country, the Old Western movie-like shootings in the streets, and the concern of the international community regarding Mexico's failing status are just... figments of my imagination, lol.

Damn, I should have stayed there! It's a bloody paradise! (no pun intended)

Tell me, if an American were to tell you that it's impossible for every person in the world to live in the US, would you call him a racist?
If they went to that extreme, I would that it would be a massive investment in the future, not call them racist as few people recognize the long-run effects of higher populations (net positive)...

A lot of people using these same real facts, eh? Sorry if they benefit a party that you don't like, I'll ask them to stop using the facts and try PRD-style conspiracy theories. Maybe the PRI causes the gas that comes out of sinkholes in the ground... I am sure the evidence will show it, and if not then everybody will forget about it by the time the evidence becomes available, you know, like the conspiracy theorists were saying about how they didn't need evidence to call the election a fraud...

You're the first person I've heard of who based their attacks on Mexico on the fund for peace, but since you cited them as your source, here is what they say about the Mexican economy:

...The score for the economy improved from 6.2 in the FSI 2007 to 6.0 in the FSI 2008. The GDP grew at a rate of 3.3% in 2007. Mexico is dependent on exports to the U.S., as they make up more than a quarter of the country’s GDP. Petroleum, cars, and electronic equipment are the main exports to the U.S. In 2007, Mexico became the world’s eighth biggest crude exporter, and the third largest supplier of oil to the U.S. Mexico is an active member of the World Trade Organization, and trade issues between Mexico and the U.S. are settled by WTO. The agricultural sector has benefited greatly from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and in 2007, fruits and vegetables exports saw a significant increase, with exports to the U.S. alone reaching over $4 million. In 2007, foreign direct investment reached $23.2 billion, a 21% increase from 2006. The U.S. is the largest foreign investor, contributing 47% of Mexico’s FDI.

I know you would not fight the drug dealers after AMLO lost, seitse, in fact, you'd probably like to give them a helping hand. Regardless, getting of hornets nests building around your home may cause some stings now, but will prevent more stings in the future.

The truth from a party you don't like is still the truth. what counter figures do you offer?

Any notice only a couple of sources said that Mexico could one day become a failing state, and didn't even imply that it was yet close. Those were government sources from the US... possibly interested in supporting the Merida initiative by emphasizing the importance of assistance Mexico now so that the plan gets passed even during a recession when helping other countries wouldn't be popular...

Oh I'm sorry, am I starting to sound like a paranoid PRD-voter?

Tedious and predictable.

Provide all the economic figures you want. Having a few families that control the wealth (including the world's 2nd richest man), the numbers look amazing... but that doesn't take away the reality of the millions in misery, the MASSIVE drug dealing, the corruption, the chaos...

Have you ever lived in real Mexico, as a Mexican*?

If the answer is no, then I have nothing to discuss with you, kid. You're in fantasy land.

Here, here's a brain you can borrow:

Yes, yes, I am a red commie, loving Chávez, and financed by Castro to post in this forums and spread the gospel of the proletariat. Yes, you are completely right, those of us who deny what a paradise Mexico is, we are all enemies and godless commies.

You sound like George Bush. It's not flattering. And I should have guessed your age many, many posts ago. My mistake. One day, when you grow up, you'll understand many things.

Aaaggghh. No! Seitse don't give in now! I've been watching this - and there's me thinking eljefejesus is all mouth and no trousers (and about 17 years old too) - so don't succumb to the internal logic of Communism, don't fall for Chavez's beerhall charm, don't deny or not deny whatever it is you might have not been denying about Mexico (that bit is harder to follow plus there's irony in play, so excuse me on the specifics of this), don't be a godless anything! There are people monitoring this back and to, but we don't dare intervene. Get eljefejesus for me. Get him good. He hurt me.
