Neither you nor Marauder defines the safety net. For one thing, who qualifies to fall in to the net? A wastrel was interviewed on a Hawaii beach, surfing, bragging how he can live off the govt programs to the tune of about $40K a year. This man would qualify for your net. Enough said.

You are quite casual about the constitution. The framers whole purpose was to get ...[text shortened]... ut on the street. If someone is NOT envious of our country, it is because of our liberal leadership.
"my family was average, I borrowed for the last half of college, and for all my law school tuition. It took 10 years to pay it back. As to a house, I got a 90% mortgage and bought one."
If it's true you're over sixty, the numbers don't come even close to comparison.
Right now, a minimum wage doesn't pay rent anywhere in the US. College tuition has steadily increased while wages have stagnated. I don't care what YOU did 40 years ago. (with government help you don't even know you benefited from) . I care what is done NOW.

"As you say 'unable to leave' a town, it is easy to leave a town in the USA, so I can't comment on that"
Yep. The total lack of any empathy that colors your every post.

Actually you are correct, tuition is out of proportion from my day. But the beauty of America is that there are many avenues, or you just become complacent. There are studies that college is not so important too make it in America. But you are right, I would have a harder time of it these days. BUT, there is no better country than the USA to become successful and succeed ahead of the competition. I don't see huge movements of competition in other countries,...here we try to outdo the next guy! It works.
I will restate what was blocked by moderators. I apologize for deriding Romania, but your having cast aspersions on the USA left me no option.
Not a Socialist country? When you tell me the govt decides about your hiring and firing.? Socialist tenets. I can fire someone for not bathing, and stinking. No govt involvement.
Pillow Factory: What about rules that protect the employer? He is the one providing jobs. And what is 'selfish' about running a business and creating jobs? Making more money than the employees? And what is the moral tack of yours? I see nothing immoral....Don't get you there.
Who makes decisions: I agree to comply with regulations, but what you have told me means that govt is involved in your day to day (hiring/firing) business. That goes way too deep into regulations. I could fire someone for piling pink hair on top of his head and distracting other employees. You are fired, that is it. How else could it be? And I dont have time to truck with people like that, and Surely no time to defend this guy against the govt. Then you mention bankruptcy, healthcare and being evicted. The employer has nothing to do with their personal lives. Or, are you saying that your govt makes you be involved. Which, is socialism.

What is the 'overall good' that is achieved through the govt? Good for whom? And what exploiting are you talking about? Employees are free to come and go after inspecting insurance, wages and benefits provided by a random employer. Their choice. And yes, if an employer cannot provide a decent wage, the employee does not have to work there. If, on the other hand, there are terrible working conditions, our govt in the USA would shut them down. We DO have regulations for that.
