It also allows they employer to pay less than minimum wage and get away with it since the whole arrangement is illegal anyway. The employer who pays cash is complicit in the fraud and if he goes down his worker goes down too.

A huge huge chunk of your tax bill, much larger than the chunk that pays for unemployment, is earmarked for economic stability. Keep the federal cash flowing to the military contractors, farmers, oil refineries, car manufacturers.
Guess who benefits the most from this stability? Rich people. As Joe keeps writing, anyone who has an investment account is making money for nothing, chicks for free. The federal subsidies for economic stability are paying people not to work, to the point where a modest inheritance outperforms a full time job.
