You pretty much expressed my thoughts exactly there. Well put.

Last time I checked America was about the tenth fattest nation in the world.

But why, again, does that matter?

This is sort of how the "widget incident" started... Hope the Samoans have a "General Forum Approved" sense of humour...

i think americans have a sense of nation which is the envy of every other country in the world. whether you follow individual policies or not at least they have a vision of themselves.
i can only think of the old quote of america as the world policeman. easy to criticise but when you need a cop who do you call ?

Ghostbusters - that should win me my points.

"have a sense of nation which is the envy of every country in the world" - I would have to disagree there - the American nationalism is no more rabid than an English football fan's. When you live in America, there is a sense of place, but it gets smaller and smaller - The country, the state, the city, the neighborhood - how many other countries in the world have people claiming pride in "the southside" or the "eastside" or just some random street the way you do in America? American pride breaks down in the face of difference of any sort within their own borders. I mean no insult by this, but again, having lived there for more than a decade, I've seen it happen that neighbour hates neighbour while both claim pride in America.

Irish people have a hyper-developed sense of nation, possibly because it is less than a hundred years since the beginning of the fight for independence, and they have the same issues - in Dublin it's Northside (generally considered less affluent and more dangerous) versus the southside (generally wealthy etc.) Again, this is subdivided into areas and people are almost psychotically attached to their neighborhood/city/team/area in various situations.

I think that this is probably the same all over. Everyone loves or has ties to something in the place that they live, or the place that they are from, or even places they stayed for a while in between (I would still stand up for Arizona and its crazy-assed wild-west ways over, say, Oklahoma. I lived in Arizona for years, but only visited Oklahoma.)

People have a crazy attachment to the patches of dirt they've camped on, the places they've huddled together in against any adversity - and that goes for every place on Earth. The reason people think that Americans have a greater sense of nation, of being "one nation, under god" is only to do with the propaganda that is thrown about.

- I've probably lost my Ghostbusters points because I was going on for so long.
