Ranks
Troops within an army can be assigned to different ranks. Troops in rank 1 will be dealt damage first. Troops in rank 5 will be dealt damage last. An astute general will put his lesser troops in the front ranks and put his better troops in the higher ranks.
Consider an army that has 5 heavy infantry (34% attack, 3 hit points) and 5 longbowmen (60% attack, 1 hit point). The heavy infantry can absorb a lot of damage, while the longbowmen are much more vulnerable. The obvious strategy will be to assign your heavy infantry to rank 1 and your longbowmen to rank 2. That way your longbowmen will be protected from attack for a much longer time and can continue to dish out some awesome punishment to the enemy.
Movement: Hold Position
When you issue marching orders to one of your armies you will see a list of all the provinces that army is eligible to march into. You will also see an option called "hold position." Now, you may very well ask, why would anyone issue an order to hold position? The answer is that you use this option to insure your various armies arrive for battle in a certain province at the same time. Consider the following:
England wants to attack the province of Wales. They have an army (A1) of 5 heavy infantry in Cornwall. They also have an army (A2) of 5 heavy cavalry in Kent. A shrewd English general will want all their troops to arrive in Wales on the same phase to maximize their effectiveness, rather than feeding them into the battle piecemeal. Cornwall is adjacent to Wales, while Kent is two provinces away. The English general would issue orders to his two armies that would look like the following:
A2
phase one: March to Cornwall (1 MP).
phase two: March to Wales (2 MP, for 3 total used).
A1
phase one: March-hold position.
phase two: March to Wales (2 MP used).
Both armies arrive in Wales on phase two and soundly rout the Welsh rabble.
Edit: holding position does not cost you a MP if you do it once. If you do it two consective phases it will cost you one MP.

Originally posted by no1marauderI'm trying to save them all a lot of useless reading by giving them the information that they will need to know immediately. As I've said, 90% of the rules are for things that you don't need to know right away. But someone new to the game isn't necessarily going to know which 10% are immediately relevant. If you wish to read the entire rulebook from front to back by turn 1, then be my guest.

All I know is that the first time I played the game, I didn't quite understand how the whole movement thing worked and my 1st turn orders were illegal (and therefore not executed). It slowed down my progress. As we have 22 people who have never played the game before, the chance for mistakes is great.

Chapter 9 has a bunch of tips for the first few moves without Rob's delusions of grandeur. Now go back to your "WOW! Please Rob tell us more" mode; I'm getting a beer.
no1maraudar, whether this is "massaging his massive ego" or not i really dont care. it is helping a lot to those who have never played these kinds of games and dont want to devote 24 hours to reading the blasted manual.

You'll have about as many allies as North Korea. :'(
Besides, I thought you weren't going to lower yourself into looking at this thread. Now it seems to be one of your favorites. 😲
stop acting like an idiot, no one has said anything to coax this guys ego. and there is a difference between goodnatured goading and what u said. it sounds like you are paying more attention to this guys information than any one else.
p.s. "internet wargame" kinda sounds a lot like the game played at the site your posting these forums in.
