The exact meaning of this has intrigued me for a long time.
Anyone have any thoughts on the numerological significance - or insignificance - of the number 666?
I'd be interested to here how you arrived at your theory, not just the theory itself.

I've also heard that if you numberize languages (a=1, b=2, etc.), like latin or Greek or whatever (Jesus' orginal language?) that 666 spells the name of the beast.
I certainly hope it doesn't spell Shavixmir. That would be a bit of a bummer.
Isn't it to do with the Kabbala, and that hebrew letters have number values associated, so that you can always work out the numerical value of a word.
If I remember, it's something like the Jesus monogam turned upside down looks like some other hebrew letters. Add them up and you get 616, the number of the beast (Yes).
Then christians started adding up the names of people who were mean to them and getting 616. Until they go to Nero, who persecuted them massively. His name was 666, so they changed the number of the beast. Or, something like that.

usmc - the number 7 RBHILL said was god's number. That is true according to the bible because god created the world in 6 days and rested on the seventh hence it is his number. According to Gematria god's number is not 7 but 26.

The meaning of this # has been discussed more than that of any other part of the book of Rev. The 3 sixes have been said to represent many things, including the # of man or the unholy trinity of Satan, the first beast, and the false prophet (16:13). If the # 7 is considered to be the perect # in the Bible, and if 3 sevens represent complete prefection, then the # 666 falls completely short of perfection. The first readers or thsi book probably applied the # to the Emperor Nero, (which someone already said) who symbolized all the evils of the Roman empire. The Greek letters or Nero"s name represent numbers that total 666. Whatever specific application the # is given, the # symbolizes the worldwide dominion and complete evil of the unholy trinity designed to undo Christ's work and overthrow him, which will never happen because Christ already won.
