I didn't think he was ever a game mod? I thought the game mods did the unmasking, ordinary pond scum like us just reported our suspicions.
Sometimes the Game Mods took my suggestion, sometimes they (or the Admins) have allowed blatant cheats to continue to operate on the site.

Thank god he wasn't elected as a game mod as we would have no one left as the site is infested with 1300 players using Rybka on its strongest setting.

Stop acting like a martyr. If you make incorrect statements, people are going to call you on them. It's no use whining about it, Big Boy.

EDIT: I would modify this part: I would support an amnesty only if the player who had cheated confessed to the site admins and was placed on some sort of probation to be monitored by the cheat police, although his name need not be made public.
I stated later in that thread that I believed public disclosure would be desirable.
Originally posted by no1marauderBanning the blatant cheaters would be a good start. I wasn't here back in 2004 so could you put your proposed guidelines up again? I'd like to see them.

Ah, found them. You were too quick on the edit for me.

Just for your delectation here's a PM I sent during game to blatant engine user:
"Hi.
You've come a long way since this loss Game ******* & several others against 1100 rateds just over a year ago.
What's your secret & is it really worth me playing on in our games now you're rated 2000+?
By the way, in the above game you missed a mate in one with 5.Bxf7++
Also, just to let you know, a 2100 has submitted evidence of foul play on your behalf.
Regards,
Steve"
And the response:
"hi steve ...
the game that you indicated was a game i had with a friend and a colleague from my office, while we were still toying around. so there're way too many good moves that i've missed on purpose, i suppose the game should have been unrated ... oh well, can't really judge a person by one game, can you?
to tell you the truth - i've joined this site just to play with friends and some of those games were for the fun of it, winning or loosing was not crucial. it's only in the past six to seven months that i've taken all the games i play seriously.
and the secret? hmmm, there's no secret really - take time, think, learn from mistakes, read books on chess and etc. so it is up to you whether you want to have the games with me or not - i'm not a machine and do loose games, there're at least three games currently that i'm trying to salvage, but chances are very slim. besides, i've recently lost a game to a similarly rated player as yourself due to a blunder on my side.
as for a player reporting me for an investigation - that's his choice. although it'll be a waste of time since i'm using only my brain and my experience in playing on this site.
but anyway, thanks for a message and good luck in your games and tournaments!
******"
