Is Chipper Jones the third best hitter in baseball? Your ELO rater says so. It says A-Rod is the best BTW.

Scott Rolen is 7th on the list and he hasn't been able to hit his way out of a wet paper bag since June 2010.

You understand that this is a lifetime ranking, not a current ranking.

Yes, I would say Chipper Jones may have been the 3rd best hitter all time among this group.

A-Rod is probably the best of the bunch as well.
Rolen was a pretty fair clutch hitter in his time, but that may be a little high.

But what the hell, numbers are numbers.

Who says your numbers are better than their numbers?

Sabermetrics isn't the end all be all by the way.
It is a nice buzz for now, until the next geek wheels out another model.

You don't make any sense. The discussion was about the best hitter in baseball NOW. For some reason, you brought up the rankings in the ELO rater. They have little relevance to the question: "Who is the best hitter in baseball NOW".

The answer to that question based on their performance in recent years is: Joey Votto.

You are entitled to your opinion (even though it is wrong) ;-)

What about Pujols?

I know he's having a bad year so far, but his 2008-2010 seasons were unbelievable and he's led the MLB in OPS+ 4 of the last 6 years.

He's on the downslide. His offensive WAR and OPS+ both dropped significantly last year, he's been dreadful this year and he's 32 years old.

Screw the best hitter!!

Don't look now but the Reds are in first place after a 4 game sweep of the Braves. ๐Ÿ˜€

It's still early, but I'm not surprised. The starting pitching has been good lately, the bullpen is the best in the NL and some of the guys are starting to hit. It's possible the NL Central will be a walkover.

Lance Berkman going down for the year aided your cause, but it won't be a walk over.
I still think the Cardinals will prevail. It is a long season.

(Shrug) If Hamilton maintains that pace for the entire year, which would leave him at 69 HRs and 182 RBIs, I'll happily admit he's the best hitter in baseball.

In other news, Reds won and Cardinals lost. Lead up to 1.5 games.

Well it is official. Chapman gave up his very first run of the year.....in June. The Reds then proceeded to lose to the Pirates.....again. ๐Ÿ˜ž

The Reds simply are not good enough for Chapman to give up any runs.....ever. Too bad he is human.

Speaking of which, we have already discussed who the best hitter in baseball is, but what about pitcher? Would anyone here include Chapman as one of the best?

A relief pitcher is never the best pitcher in baseball. If he were the best pitcher in baseball, he'd be a starter.

I'm as big a Mariano Rivera fan as exists, but calling a guy who pitches 80 innings the best pitcher in baseball is grossly unfair to the guys who pitch 230 innings.

We remain in first and the Pirates are no threat. Chapman will occasionally give up a run esp. when he has to pitch two nights in a row. But the Reds will still win the World Series.

Chapman probably would be a starter by now IF Madson hadn't went down for the season.
