Lets not get carried away here.... His human rights record wasn't exactly pristine.... although he never tried to hide it.... Unlike many, many others...
I would tend to agree that he was an impressive human who truly believed in his cause.....
But greatest person in the history of mankind? Surely there are better candidates.....

I think he did alot of excellent things to promote guys having beards..... and if anyone ever escaped from Club Gitmo, I'm sure Fidel would have had them returned... in the name of diplomacy and good will between the US and Cuba
He may have actually tortured them first though

You forgot the small bit about him allowing the USSR to park nuclear warheads on Cuban soil that nearly sent the world into a nuclear nightmare from which we probably would all be dead. Other than that he was a fine chap and will be missed. :'(
You may not agree with his political Ideas. But then he never agreed with yours either..... You do have to admit he was a remarkable and impressive human none the less.... All the propaganda the US spouted about him during and after the cold war was nothing but propaganda... Unfortunately it's still spouted today and most of the USA's political right believes it.....
He never tried to have anyone in the USA killed either.... The USA did try and have him killed..... 638 times I believe? And how many Cubans have you actually asked about him? He did ok by his people generally. The embargo and outside political pressures has resulted in his country collapsing around him.... Which is why so many people flee from cuba. However his health and education systems is one of the finest in the world.....

There's an interesting thread topic mind you....

She was a cutie with big boobies. (o Y o) She married a man who was paralyzed from the waist down due to being shot in Mexico or somewhere. The guy used to argue that the Aztecs did none of the horrible things they were known for like ripping out human hearts. He said that was Spanish slander.
I used to wonder if she was getting action on the side and whether I should try to get in on it. She seemed to like me. I didn't go for it though.

You're right... to an extent. You see, Castro's arse-kicking isn't just a failure of Castro himself, but, rather, his entire way of running the country.
When an American president gets old, we have the electoral process -- a free market of governance, if you will -- that allows us to freely select a new president. But under Socialism (especially Cast ...[text shortened]... astro's arse" (perhaps only metaphorically) because it has the free democratic system.

And don't you think it at least amusing that despite all your embargos, all your assissination attempts and all your political wrangling that Castro actually managed to get such a good education and health system up and running?
I mean, it's not like Cuba is like... uh... big or anything, is it?

Originally posted by whodeyJFK's overreaction almost caused nuclear war. Given that the US had installed medium range missiles in Turkey, a Soviet response in Cuba was logical. And the US' constant threats to invade Cuba led Castro, understandably, to want Soviet protection.

It all worked out happily anyway. JFK overruled his Joint Chiefs and didn't invade (if he had, the Soviets had enough short range Luna missiles to wipe out an invasion force the size of D-Day's and the commanders had authority to use them). The USSR agreed to remove the missiles on the promise that the US wouldn't invade Cuba and the secret understanding that the Jupiter missiles would be withdrawn from Turkey. As a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a hot line was installed between Washington and Moscow and there was never again such a close call.
So it all worked out; everybody won. Besides, Castro himself didn't have any nuclear weapons, why are you blaming him for the possibility of a nuclear nightmare? That blame deserves to be shared by the leaders of the US and the USSR.

They also have a secret cure for all cancers and most other killer diseases. So what if you have to bring your own pillow and sheets if you have to stay in the hospital overnight. Sounds like a fair trade off to me. Love ya mucho, Castro.
