Originally posted by Fat LadyI think he has occasionally turned out in the Bundesliga and maybe also the Dutch league, but that's about it. He certainly was a loss to the ranks of English professional chess players.
As far as I know, Matthew Sadler hasn't played competitive chess for more than seven years. I think he became a computer programmer instead (working for HP in Holland? I may have made that bit up).
British starts today.

He is the second seed. I only recognise a few other names in the tournament. Peter Jowett, who is the fourth seed, used to play in the same club as me when he was studying in Oxford about twelve years ago. I was graded about 165/170 at the time and he was much stronger than me, so if he's still that good he should have a good chance in this one.

I'll be interested in seeing how Lee Davis of Barry Chess Club performs.
Originally posted by streetfighterI bet you £10 that Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant does not finish in the top 3 of the 2008 British Championships. I'll even give you 10-1 odds (i.e. if she finishes in the top 3, I give you £100, if she doesn't you give me £10). Let me know if you want to take the wager.
As I posted earlier; 'Keti was 8th equal last year and outright 2nd the year before (both those tournaments were stronger than this year's looks to be I believe?!). If that doesn't make her a genuine contender then what would??'
Well, if they are going to lose sleep over playing anyone, then Keti would have to be one of them surely?! Don't understa as proven she can more than hold her own at this level in previous British Championships??

Originally posted by SquelchbelchTell you what, there is quite a lot of interest in Mr Davis on this site, so I'll start a new thread after the first round showing his progress and hopefully the score of his games. In the Welsh Championships he relied on a pirc / modern defence with Black, but scored badly with it. I wonder if he will play the same thing at the British?
I have a fiver on Lee Davis winning. I doubt he'll even lose 1 match.
His FIDE rating is rather deflated.
