Jackson - Lee,round 1
Look at the position after Black's7...,Nc6.It's actually a sicilian grand prix attack position where white played an unusual d3 before getting his light squared bishop out.Two differences though:
1.in the grand prix this position would be reached at move 6
2.in the grand prix it would beBlack to move. Here it's White!
Now I wonder, could this be home preparation from Lee?Maybe he thought White's less active light square bishop, which also cannot be traded for the c6 knight, makes up for Black's lost tempo.
Any thoughts anyone?
Btw,been following this thread with intrest, really like it.There should be more of these 🙂
Congratulations to Lee Davis, who managed to draw in round 3 of the 5 Day Morning Tournament:
55 Gardner, Joan........... 102A [1] ½ - ½ Davis, Lee.............. 163A [½] 7 2
Don't let Joan Gardner's lowly grade fool you - she was as high as 118 ten years ago so is obviously a tough cookie.
Our county teams played against each other in the last round of the Chiltern Cup a few months ago, and I if I recall correctly she was very unlucky to lose to our 80 year old captain, Ian Brooke:
Buckinghamshire Oxfordshire
1 Paul McIntyre (175) 0-1 Jon D'Souza-Eva (173)
2 Koichi Nicholas (175) 0-1 Will Burt (166)
3 Roger De Coverly (174) ½-½ Sean Terry (156)
4 Brian Shipley (157) 0-1 Martin Bush (146)
5 Nigel Livesey (149) ½-½ Mike March (142)
6 Dave Turner (136) 0-1 Mike Kimber (140)
7 Kevin Hawkins (132) 1-0 Simon King (137)
8 Tom Rixon (127) 1-0 George Spalding (133)
9 Graham Brown (124) 0-1 Richard Beckett (132)
10 Eugene Bolduc (119) 0-1 Matthew Daggitt (131)
11 Greg Edmunds (114) 0-1 Karl Biswas (130)
12 Amdy Challenger (113) 0-1 Derek Edwards (129)
13 Ian Hall (110) ½-½ Lucy Smith (121)
14 James Foster (104) 0-1 Geoff Rasell (119)
15 Fred Day (102) 0-1 John Yates (117)
16 Joan Gardner (98) 0-1 Ian Brooke (101)
17 Chris Stothart (96) 1-0 Default
... but Lee's joy at this result will be tempered by a loss to Dave Ledger in the afternoon:
32 Ledger, Dave............ 2260 (0) 1 - 0 Davis, Lee.............. 2071 (0) 31 59
This leaves Lee's campaign in tatters, the best he can hope for now is 8/11, which is unlikely to be enough to win the Championship outright.

+0 =2 -4
both his draws against BCF graded players barely over 100?
You know I do empathise with him. I had a terrible run last year and didn't win for 20 games. I hope something similar doesn't happen to LD at the british.
Still, that's what you have to expect when you're a moderately rated player. It's different for those at the top of the tree but those of us who play our chess at a more modest level have to come to terms with periods of prolonged spankings I suppose.
Originally posted by JonathanB of LondonThree of the players who beat him were 190 ish, so gets 140 for those games. He lost to a 164 (a 114 performance) and drew with a 102 and a 109.

So, (140*3 + 114 + 102 + 109) / 6 = 124 or so

It is that sort of a position, isnt it. The type where a killer blow could come at any moment.
What about Rxf5 Nxf5 Nf2+ Kg1 Nh3+ - would be at least a draw.
Congratulations to David Tebb for chalking up his first win in the Major Open! This leaves him just half a point behind the leaders after a glut of draws on the top boards.
