how about Rd8 ? (Haven't really checked that yet) and then kingside castle on the next move.
I think it basically boils down to who is going to protect the g7 pawn. Will it be the king or the rook? If black castles kingside, the king can protect the g7 pawn and frees up the rook for attacking/defensive/counterattacking duty. If the king castles queenside, the rook is likely to be stuck defending the g7 pawn, which is obviously undesirable.
Originally posted by xsf5 seems like a positionally suspect move. It creates a hole on g6 for whites pieces, and a backward pawn on e6. Do you think Black can afford to do something like this? I didn't consider f5 before because of these things, but do you think f5 is good in this position? We've just created a few more weaknesses for white to exploit.
Ok then :
17. .... Nd5
18. Qf3 f5
where does the rook go now...
next
Besides the rook will reposition on g3 via Rh3 then Rg3 placing pressure on g7. Looks difficult to me.
Originally posted by KyoA lot has been said here about the backward pawn theme. On the flip side white can attack elsewhere while black is tied up defending the backward pawn, worsened by the fact that white has secured the space in front of it (g6... the real weak point imho).

For the rook to reposition to g3, as you pointed out, takes 2 moves-black gets tempo.
19. Rh3 Qg5+
Black gains some control of the center, more space to move, and can still castle either side (yes, there can still be problems). I guess its really a matter of playing style.
Originally posted by xsthe rook doesnt go anywhere, white just moves 19. Ng6! and then probably will follow 19. ...Qg5+ 20. Kb1 O-O-O 21. g3 Rhe8 and white has established an outpost in black's terrain.

I still keep my O-O-O. we won't get any surprises then.
Originally posted by xsIt may be playable as you suggest, however I wouldn't venture in that direction and any positional virtuoso could slowly strangle us if we created more weaknesses. Still I'd rather sit it out and go for an equal endgame

more like 20....Ne7! and the trade is on - whites choice.
I'm not trying to goad you or anyone else, but have worked out the variables.

What about the Q-side castle, where does it lead?
17... O-O-O 18.Rf4 .... 19.Qf3 ....
Originally posted by xsI don't know, after 20. ...Ne7 there would follow 21. Nxh8 Qxh4 and then alot is possible... I think 22. Qb3, attacking b7 and e6, and the queen will take on of both, so then we have no castling.

after 17. ...O-O-O 18. Rf4 Rhf8 19. Qf3 Qd6, and equality. not 19. Qg3?? Nxh5 -+
