Originally posted by Samdoggyou missed my point - although I didnt say it - if the knight isnt taken, IM will either take the unprotected rook with his queen or the pawn on f7 with his knight. It's a double threat, and it can only be countered with Rxe5. We will just have to find a better 20th or 21th move.
what about Ra4 or Ra6?
Ra4 and/or Ra6 before the 22th move could be a solution though.
A pitty we cannot play 18...Rd6 and 19...Rhd8 because of 19.Qa3! with a clear win.
I believe 18...Rhf8 is the most solid continuation. There is also the possibility of the weird looking 18...Rdf8 though it seems to define Black's defensive strategy from there on.
The pointless venture of the rook 18...Rd5 19.c4 Ra5 is in my opinion a bit premature; however 18...Rd5 19.c4 Rdd8 may be a good line to consider. White has no immediate threats and he has lost the possibility of protecting the d pawn with c3 in the future giving us a clear pressure point.
Originally posted by Kyothat would be a very strange move. the only thing that happens then would be black winning a pawn.
Rhf8 is probably the best move here. we don't really have many options.
If ...Rd5, c4 Rdd8 would white be able to pull off d5, which opens up the position to his advantage? we should be careful of this.
Originally posted by Samdoggpassive? it helps to strengthen our position. after this move we can finally think of something offensive, probably.
I think Rhf8 is too passive. Give a good game with rook d5.
And I don't think you give "a good game" with Rd5. It is dangerous, especially against an opponent like IM. The odds for us losing will be bigger.
Originally posted by schakuhrAlright my mistake, but we can still protect the f pawn with the other rook. I think the rook would be fine on the a file because it has pawns behind it to protect it.

For those interested, I challenged IM to a setpiece game from move 14 in this game, where I played 14. Qb4. You can see how it turned out...

Having read through all the analysis on here, Rhf8 seems to be the only reasonable move to me, followed by 19. Qf3. 19 ...Nd5 looks good then. I thought 18 ...Kb8 looked good but schakuhr showed its not the best.

would a new thread be a good idea for convenience?
